Usambara Hiking

Visiting Usambara is the best way to unwind from your hectic schedule. Usambara is found at Tanga Region in Lushoto District, at around 1200m, this leafy highland town is nestled in a fertile valley sorrounded by pines and eucalyptus. The usambara mountains are known for
scenic drives, hiking, biking, birding and simply relaxing.
You will also have a great time connecting with the villagers and learning about their lives during this walks, and your eyes wilii be drawn the beautiful natural houses with floral designs. This would take 6days.

>>Arrival day – Pick up at Kilimanjaro airport and drive to Moshi.
Our driver will pick you up at the airport and drive you to Chanya Lodge in Moshi where you will meet a representative of Sali Safaris Kilimanjaro & Zanzibar. Here we will discuss itinerary, changes or extra requests. Afterwards dinner and overnight at the lodge.

>>D1 Full – Drive from Moshi to Lushoto (Irente Viewpoint)

After breakfast we will drive you to Lushoto (5-6 hrs). The trek starts in Lushoto town and passes through villages to Irente viewpoint. On the way, you may see one- or two-horned chameleons. From the viewpoint, you will see the Usambara-Mountains, the Masai plains and huge plantations of Agave Sisalana (useful plant from which sisal hemp is obtained), introduced to Tanganyika by the Germans during the colonial period. Lushoto was developed into a popular summer resort as “Wilhelmstal” and was even considered as the capital at that time.

>>D2 – Magamba Rainforest Hike

The hike starts in the town of Lushoto and passes through the old village of Kwembago, known by the chief Zumbe Kimweri, passing beautiful terraced landscapes in the deep green of plants and trees. In the forest you can see black and white Columbus monkeys, blue monkeys, chameleons and different species of birds. You can also visit some caves and tunnels used by the Germans during World War 1. Have lunch at an altitude of 1840m at Kigulu Hakwewa peak viewpoint while enjoying the view to villages and forest landscape.

>>D3 – Hike from Lushoto to Lukozi (6-7 hrs)

Start at 8:30am for the hike from Lushoto to Lukozi. We will pass small villages and walk through Kandele Kampaa forest where you can see chameleons, monkeys and elephants. Meanwhile, you can also interact with local people and have interesting conversations. On the way, we can make sugar cane wine together with the local farmers by squeezing the sugar cane with the original machines. Overnight stay in Lukozi.

>>D4 – Hike from Lukozi to Hikers Home in Goka  (4-5 hrs.)

Start at 9:30am for the hike from Lukozi through villages and cultivated lands to Hikers Home, where we will spend the night. Here several activities are possible as we are close to a rainforest and waterfalls. Find new friends and new contacts to the local people, exchanging culture, food and language. Hikers Home provides lesson courses for Swahili language and/or cooking for those who is interested (1-2 hrs.).

>>D5 – Hike from Hikers Home in Goka to Magumba

Start 9:00 am for the hike from Goka through Shagayu forest to Mambo village and overnight in Magumba. Visit to a potter to see the traditional methods of making pottery (5-6 hrs.).
